How to solve problems on mixed numbers

1. Mixed numbers contain a whole number and a proper fraction.
2. A proper fraction is one whose numerator is lesser than the denominator.
3. An improper fraction is one whose numerator is greater than denominator.
4. Mixed fractions can be converted to improper fractions .We have worked a example problem at the bottom from improper fractions worksheets

This can be done in two ways:

Method 1:

1.Multiply the denominator of fractional part (5) with the integer portion (2)
2.5 * 2 = 10
3.Add the numerator 10 + 3 = 13
4.Therefore the improper fraction has numerator 13 and denominator of the fractional part (5)
5.2 3/5 = 13/5
Answer: 13/5

Method 2:

1.The mixed number, 2 3/5, can be changed to an improper fraction by converting the integer portion to a fraction with the same denominator as the fractional portion and then adding the two fractions

2.So the integer portion 2 is converted to 10/5.

3.The sum of the two fractions becomes 10/5 + 3/5 = 13/5.
Answer: 13/5
